I'm not in the medical field, like you, but I've heard that even though the test is positive it can still be inaccurate....? I'm holding out hope that's all it is. Keep us updated and try to take it easy (I know, easier said than done.)
Out of 1,000 pregnant women, approximately 50 will have quad marker screen results that indicate an increased risk for having a baby with a birth defect. Of those 50 women, only one or two will actually have a baby with an open neural tube defect. About 40 women will have quad marker screen results that show an increased risk for having a baby with Down syndrome and one or two will actually have a baby with Down syndrome.
It is also my understanding that this test has a lot of false positives and is really a screening test, not a diagnostic test. But at the same time, I know that for me even knowing that is the case would not really help allay the anxiety :( I hope that further tests can give you a definite answer.
Oh, how absolutely scary. I hope you don't have to wait too long to get more information. My opinion, having been on the receiving end of bad news, is that the waiting is the absolutely worst part.
I am sending all of my thoughts and wishes that this is a false positive.

Now take another deep breath.
I have no words that you haven't already thought of. Try to stay as positive and calm as possible. I'm sorry and am here thinking about you. ((HUGS))
I'm sorry, this must be so scary. I hope further testing turns out ok. I'll be thinking about you too.
Just googled and found this one WebMD
